BCA Awareness and Training

A key component of the ABCB's work program is to promote awareness and understanding of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and its provisions, within the building and construction community. The ABCB is currently undertaking various inter-related projects under our information and awareness raising strategy.

BCA Awareness and Training Circle

BCA Training Gateway

The BCA Training Gateway provides links to information on BCA-related training courses delivered by industry associations and the tertiary sector. In particular, the web page provides links to courses offered by training organisations that have utilised the ABCB's BCA Awareness Resource Kits. This approach ensures that the Gateway promotes courses that offer consistent, up-to-date BCA information.

The BCA Training Gateway initiative is a great opportunity for the ABCB to partner with industry and the tertiary sector to enhance the delivery of BCA-related information to the building and construction community. If you require further information about the Gateway or you are currently running a BCA-related course you would like promoted, please email BCAawareness@abcb.gov.au.

BCA Awareness Resource Kits

The ABCB is currently developing a range of training modules (Resource Kits) to increase awareness of BCA provisions within the Australian building and construction sector.  The Resource Kits are intended to provide up-to-date and consistent information on the BCA and have been designed to assist you with your training needs.

The first two Kits in the series An Introduction to the BCA and Understanding the BCA’s Performance Requirements were released to industry associations, tertiary institutions and building control administrations in late 2005 and throughout 2006. The third and fourth modules in the series Understanding Energy Efficiency Provisions for Class 1 & 10 Buildings and Understanding Energy Efficiency Provisions for Class 2 to 9 Buildings were released during 2007.

A major component of the Resource Kits is an extensive PowerPoint presentation including lecture notes and comprehensive information on Performance Requirements and Alternative Solutions.  Also featured are FAQs, Group Exercises and Case Studies, which can all be workshopped as a group.

The Kits are available to industry trainers, tertiary lecturers and RTO's in a convenient CD-Rom format. To obtain the CD-Rom's please contact the ABCB at BCAawareness@abcb.gov.au

For sole practitioners or the public, the Resource Kits are available to view on the ABCB website.

BCA Information Seminars

The ABCB conducts BCA Information Seminars annually to increase awareness of regulatory changes in the BCA that directly affect building practitioners and the building industry as a whole.

Preparations are currently underway for the BCA 2008 Seminars, with the ABCB partnering with the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) for the 2008 series. The half-day seminars will be conducted in capital cities throughout February and March 2008.

ABCB Cadetship (Formerly IBL Program)

The ABCB Cadetship is a 12 month opportunity to work at the ABCB, based in Canberra. If you have a building and construction related qualification, or are studying towards one, the ABCB recruits at least two Cadets annually, providing them with a unique opportunity to work on issues that impact on both the building and construction industry and Government policy.

Cadets undertake at least two rotations throughout the office and work on projects involving the technical and policy issues affecting the regulatory environment while enhancing their career prospects in the building and construction industry. Benefits of the Cadetship include: relocation assistance if you're moving from interstate, a competitive salary of approx $45,000 + superannuation, ongoing professional development opportunities and flexible working conditions.

ABCB National Conference

As part of its awareness raising strategy, the ABCB also conducts a National Conference every two years. The next conference is scheduled for 2009.
